You applied to an out of state school and got in.
Congrats, but you now have to figure out where to live. Before you panic and sign at the first place that pops up on your internet search, take a breath.
Finding a college apartment out of state is not impossible. In fact, it’s easy.
Start by joining a few housing Facebook group pages for your new school. Yes, almost every school has one.
Then head to google. Figure out exactly what area you want to live in around your new school. Close to campus? Close to the bars? A few miles away so you have peace and quiet?
Once you have a few places in mind, post on the Facebook group asking for people’s opinion. You should also search the group for people posting about the places you have in mind.
Are they looking for sublessor? If so, ask them why.
Notice a lot of people complaining about a specific property? Ask!
Social networks are a great place to get real opinions on properties from your peers.
Read Google reviews. Look at the social media of the property itself.
Finally, when you have it down to 2 to 3 places, start calling the properties.
This is where you have to be smart in terms of which questions to ask. Forget pricing details because that is all online and focus on living space and neighborhood.
Questions like, what’s the crime rate around the area? Do you include security? What utilities are included?
The best advice is to just enjoy the process. You got into college, grad school etc., and get to explore a whole new city.
