Sometimes things don’t work out.
Your roommate is driving you crazy, your landlord raised the rent, or maybe your parents kicked you out of the house. The point is that now you need an apartment, when most, if not all, on-campus apartments are full. So how do you find an apartment at the last minute?
Find a roommate.
Try checking the bulletin boards at your college. Sometimes people will post flyers looking for roommates. Post on social media that you’re looking, check the newspaper, or ask your friends. They might know someone looking for a roommate, or maybe one of your friends is looking for themselves.
Look into off-campus apartments.
Even ones that might be a little farther from campus than you’d like. Apartments farther from campus are more likely to have vacancies. This would be a good option if you own a car or like the option of living alone. Not move-in season? Do some research online and see if anyone is trying to sublease.
Be willing to go a little over your budget.
Most likely, the more inexpensive apartments near campus have already been taken. If you’re trying to find something at the last minute, you may have to lower your expectations for a bargain. If you manage to find an apartment, but it’s just too expensive to room solo, find a roommate who will help shoulder some of the expense.
Check collegerentals.com.
College Rentals has a vast database of apartments near universities all over the country. Do a quick search for your college or the city and click “check availability” to send a message to the property. You can look at multiple apartments at once this way!
Don’t give up! It’ll take some effort but you’ll find the right apartment eventually.
