Ah, cleaning your apartment. It’s can be a hassle, a chore, and yet it’s a constant responsibility. Cleaning is almost always needed, day after day. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a burden.
What you need are three simple rituals to keeping your student apartment clean.
First, keep cleaning supplies around.
Don’t let your hour to clean for the day be derailed by the fact that well, there’s no Comet to scrub the bathroom, and no sponges either. If you don’t check your stock of cleaning supplies on a regular basis, it’s easy to put off cleaning. If you put off cleaning day after day, or week after week, before you know it cleaning is like scaling Mount Everest, rather than bicycling up a 15-degree incline.
Second, make a schedule and stick to it.
Block off a time when you’re definitely going to clean. Don’t make it priority number 1—going to class, studying, and socializing can come first. But make sure it does have a time, or, again, it will get put off day after day. If you’ve decided that cleaning will take place on Wednesday afternoons, don’t let the television come between you and that mop.
Third, make it as pleasant as possible.
If you’re mopping the floor or scrubbing the bathroom, listen to new music or the podcast you’ve been dying to hear as you’re doing it. Media can make many a thing bearable. And, reward yourself after you clean on schedule. Whether it’s a run, or chocolate, or a favorite TV show, give it to yourself. Make sure that cleaning is not only an onerous chore, but associated with a goody.
