You’ve tried to keep it under control.
At first, it was small and easily fit into a corner of the bathroom, remaining conspicuously out of sight. You realize that at some point you’ll need to get a handle on the situation, but you just don’t have time. So for now, you disregard it and overlook its exponential growth.
Until one day, you’re confronted by the “Laundry Beast”! You have two options: 1.) you could ignore it and allow it to quietly eat all of your belongings as it feeds off of your negligent or 2.) you can do laundry, posthaste! But what if your place doesn’t have on sight laundry facilities? How do you effectively challenge the “Beast” now? Simple, follow these tips and you’ll have a winning strategy to defeat the laundry ogre every time, especially if you have to make the journey to the laundry mat.
Tip # 1: Plan a date and time for battle. Set a weekly or semi-monthly date and time to do laundry. Typically, you want this specified time to be one that is convenient for your schedule. So maybe, Sunday afternoons are usually pretty laid back, this would be an excellent time get the laundry finished. When you go, be sure to grab some assignments, this way you can complete your studies while you KO the laundry beast. The key to successfully using this tip is to ensure that you stick to the schedule!
Tip #2: Have an organized attack. There are tons of really cool laundry hampers and accessories that are perfect for the weekly trek to the laundry mat. Invest a few bucks into a sturdy laundry basket with wheels that can hold at least 3 loads of laundry. The size of the basket will make hauling multiple loads a breeze and the wheels will make transport ten times easier! You may also want to acquire a few small, mesh laundry bags to arrange your laundry prior to arriving at the laundry mat. By separating your laundry before you hit the ‘mat’ protects you from forgetting items. A commitment to the organization is a crucial element to this tip.
Tip #3. Try forming alliances. This final tip is more of a Hail Mary. Ask your landlord if they would be willing to install a centralized laundry facility. If you live in an apartment, start a petition or survey with your neighbors asking if they would be interested in having on sight laundry. Then bring this to your landlord. Most apartment complexes already have the rough in plumbing for laundry, so the cost could be minimal. If you live in a duplex or a house, most likely you already have the needed plumbing connections for a washer and dryer. Ask your landlord if they would be willing to provide these appliances. If they are unwilling, ask if you can purchase your own. Most landlords won’t have an issue with you buying your own machines. You can find used washers and dryers on the app LetGo and OfferUp pretty inexpensively, just be smart and safe during the transaction. Beware, if your complex does acquiesce to your request for machines, expect an increase in your rent to cover usage cost as well as the cost of the machines.
The laundry beast doesn’t have to be a monster. If you follow these basic tips, doing laundry can be as cathartic as caring for a beloved pet!
