You might be pretty excited about getting your own college apartment only to find that it’s a lot smaller than you imagined. If you get an apartment close to school, you might find that you have to compromise when it comes to decorating your space. However, this doesn’t mean that your small college apartment can’t be functional and look beautiful at the same time.
In this article from Real Simple Magazine, for example, they recommend painting your walls a lighter color, letting in more natural light and getting your items off the floor. In this article from Apartment therapy, they take a bare, small apartment and turn it into a beautiful place filled with personality. Also, note the fact that they’re not afraid of introducing a lot of items into a small space. Living in a small college apartment doesn’t mean that you can’t have a lot of things in it. You just need to arrange them in such a way that they complement each other.
Be Comfortable
It’s important to fill your small college apartment with comfortable furniture. If you’re not going to use a particular piece, there’s no point in having it in your home. When you’re testing out furniture, make sure you sit on it before you buy. If you get that “Ahhh” feeling which indicates that your entire body is relaxing, it’s the right piece for you. If you loved sitting on that carved Victorian-looking love seat, then by all means get one for your apartment. If you prefer plush couches instead, go for those.
Use Light Colors
Light colors, such as white, cream and sky blue are some example of colors that can create the illusion of a large space. You might not want all your walls and furniture to be light because this would make them pretty hard to clean, especially if they see a lot of use. However, avoiding really dark colors, like brown or black can help you keep your space looking like a small college apartment. Keep your colors light and you’ll get a greater feeling of openness in your apartment. Bright prints can also help you wake up and feel more cheerful.
Accessorize Your Small College Apartment
A great way to personalize your small college apartment and make it feel more homey is with the use of accessories. When it comes to a small college apartment, there are certain main pieces that everyone needs to have. In a living room, for example, you’re going to have seating, such as a sofa and armchair or a couple of love seats. Plus, you’ll probably have your TV and some kind of unit around it for knickknacks and books. Just having these few items makes your place look pretty bare. So you can accessorize with a rug, plants, artwork, a vase with flowers, cushions, etc.

Finding accessories at a good price (yard sales..) and making them your own (coat of paint maybe?!?) is a good way to redecorate on a budget!
I thoroughly enjoyed decorated my apartment in college. I wholeheartedly agree with using a bright color to bring life to the room. Its easy to clutter a small place so I used lots of accessories that could be placed on shelf’s throughout the apartment. I had the most comfortable bean bag chairs around the living room. They added color and were really comfortable and provided extra seating for my sorority sisters.
