While living in the dorms at college provides much more freedom than living with your parents, most students find that this housing option still has many restrictions. Off-campus apartments offer the most independence , but this usually means renting an unfurnished space. You can probably find big items like futons or fridges on Craigslist or at garage sales, but it’s important to remember these smaller “must have” necessities when living on your own or with friends off-campus.
Must have items: Silverware
Students who live off-campus usually have plenty of red solo cups and pizza boxes, but college students sometimes forget to bring cooking supplies and silverware. Even if you eat at the cafeteria most of the time, be prepared for company or staying in sometimes by packing plates, eating utensils, measuring cups and other kitchen items.
Must have items: First Aid
Resident Advisers usually have first aid kits or medical supplies when someone gets hurt in the dorms. However, if you get hurt and you don’t have a first aid kit when living in your college apartment, you will need to go to your neighbor’s apartment or out to the store to pick up the appropriate materials. This makes it important to stock up on band-aids, pain relievers and disinfectants before going back to school.
Must have items: School Supplies
Most college students have tight budgets, but cutting down on costs is especially helpful when paying for your own living space. Get basic school supplies before arriving on campus since college bookstores usually do not offer the cheapest products. Must have items include notebooks, writing utensils and more. You can find these supplies at dollar stores and by looking for bargains so that you can save some money.
Must have items: Bedding
Consider bringing a lot of your own bedding from home since you will not be sleeping on the twin-sized dorm beds that require their own special sheets anymore. Even if your comforters and pillow cases are not a perfect fit for the bed in your apartment, you still have multiple options and extra blankets for movie nights and rainy days.
Gathering everything you need for living off-campus helps you get a head start before the semester begins, but you need a place to live first. Once you find your apartment for the year, you will have a better idea of what your new living quarters need.

I think a decently stocked kitchen was the most important thing to my daughter during her college years. Even if they were just grabbing pizza, she appreciated having things to properly cut it and store the leftovers in.
