Just one more thing to tack onto your monthly rent: parking fees.
For some, parking can be a make it or break it factor when choosing an apartment. Although you may pay a parking fee for a designated spot, you could still have to walk quite a way, or you might find you only receive one spot, but there are two residents! Where does it end? How much is too much?
Especially in larger cities, you will find parking spots for an average of $75 added to your monthly rent, and much more if you request an additional space. Parking is a necessity for most people (maybe not New York City), therefore, you do not have a choice of not paying.
If you are really savvy, try using an app such as ParkMe. This app will show you the available parking destinations in your location, how full they are, the price, and you can even reserve your spot! If you want something more permanent, you could research Facebook and Craigslist in your area. You would be surprised at the people looking to make some extra cash by leasing their spot if they do not own a car.
Like anything, you will want to shop around to find which apartment suits you and your needs best, and determine what parking fees are worth it. Mostly this will depend on your area and it comes down to how bad you want that specific apartment.
Does your apartment charge for parking? How much is too much?
