When you move into your new college apartment the fun is about to begin. No, it’s not the parties, but finding furnishings for your first college apartment that can lead to a fun adventure.
Move in time means it’s time to find all of the furniture to dress up and entertain in your new space.
In case you’re unsure what furniture items you should consider bringing, here is a quick list of furniture items for dining and living room area.
- Television
- Entertainment center or TV stand
- Couch
- Reclining chair
- Coffee table
- Dining room table
Here are some methods you can use to obtain furniture as a roommate tandem
- Coordinate with your roommates on what you have and what you need.
- The perfect college apartment involves a mixture of items contributed by each roommate.
- Discuss what furniture you all have before you head to campus. If you’re missing major pieces, decide how you will acquire them. Although it may make sense for budget reasons to chip in on the major pieces (like a couch or dining table) and shop together, a problem can occur when it is time to move out. How do you split a couch three ways?
- Most students find it best for the furnishing to be a divide and conquer effort. If one student is bringing a couch and love seat, another can bring the coffee tables and lamps. Of course in college, a coffee table can be a couple milk crates, and lamps can be found at just about any garage sale or thrift store.
There is no reason to think you need the “best of the best” when you move into your first college apartment. As your parents will tell you, they didn’t have half the things you have, and they did just fine.
These are just a few ways you can find furniture together as roommates before moving into your apartment. How did you decide with your roommates on what furniture to bring? Let us know in the comment section below.

My roommates and I did some thrift store shopping for our college apartment. We all discussed beforehand what each of us already had to contribute to our new student apartment since it was off campus and unfurnished. After deciding what we still needed, we set ourselves a budget and got thrifty. My roommates and I had a lot of fun shopping and our apartment looks pretty good! 🙂
Great advise!! Definitely don’t break the bank on college apartment furniture. This furniture will be put to the test; drinks, food, swan drives, etc. You can find some decent furniture at consignment shops and lets face it, you will not want to keep any of it after college. ;
