If you’re lucky enough to have your own bedroom in an off-campus apartment, you’re probably super excited about having a place to call your own.
Before you get too excited, keep in mind that your bedroom should ideally serve several purposes. How you organize it will help determine how much “space” you actually have.
For most college students, the bedroom is their sanctuary. Not only is it where you sleep and store your clothes and personal belongings, but it’s where you go when you need some privacy. It also can serve as a great place to get some serious studying done. That is if you plan out what you need before you start filling the room with furniture.
The Bedroom
The “average” apartment bedroom is 12 x 10, which means conserving space is a necessity.
Even though you may want a larger bed, with a twin bed, you will leave more floor space for additional furniture, like a desk, a bookcase or even seating for your own private TV area.
Going vertical is always a good idea in a small space, so if you need a book case, consider buying one that fits on top of a desk unit. If the complex allows it, you can also hang shelves on the walls to get things up off the floor and out of the way.
Flat screen televisions are a great invention for several reasons, but in a small apartment, their greatest benefit is space savings. If you’re going to have a television in your bedroom, invest in a small flat screen and mount the TV on the wall. Again, this frees up valuable floor space for other uses.
The best way to maximize your use of space is to start with only the basics in your bedroom and add to them as you find the room. By keeping your bedroom organized, you will be able to make it your own personal sanctuary.

This is some good advice for my college apartment. Even though I plan on living off campus next semester, I worry that there won’t be enough space for my roommates and I. Student living in a college town seems tricky! I’m definitely going to go with a bookshelf that fits on my desk rather than on the floor. Maybe I’ll get some shelves for the wall, too! I’m super excited about my college rental, thanks for the tips!! 😀
Why do college apartment bedrooms have to be so small??!! It really is an exercise in space conservation…luckily, my new student community provides a flat screen already, so that helps (and means I don’t have to mount it myself!), and I’m hoping to find room for a desk in my room too, so I can study in peace without my roommates bugging me.
I think I might take some of these ideas into consideration. I will be moving into my first college apartment next year and I am looking for any tips that I can use when decorating my bedroom!
