Adjusting from home to apartment living can be a challenging time for college students as they tackle new and additional responsibilities—having some helpful laundry tips will allow you to make the best impression to future lovers, friends and employers. While college is a busy and sometimes hectic time of life, it’s no excuse for wearing the same three shirts again and again because you haven’t scheduled time to wash your favorite pants.
Here are some helpful laundry tips and tricks that will help you put your best foot (and cleanest) sock forward:
Some apartments will have in-suite washer and dryers, but many listings still use communal laundry rooms: start collecting quarters now. Ask your parents to save them, look under your couch, keep a jar by the door to place change in as you come home and even ask for a roll of coins for your birthday. There’s nothing worse than starting a load of whites and realizing you’re one quarter shy of the cost of drying. It’s amazing how quickly you can go through quarters as each step of the laundry process starts to add up.
Be courteous of other launderers. Keep a close watch on the time so that you can quickly move your clothes from the washer into the dryer when they have completed their cycle. Avoid hogging the machines while others are waiting. Being conscious of your time will also ensure that nobody takes your clothes out for you and sets them wherever they see fit.
Cut down on carrying cumbersome bottles by using individual dryer sheets and detergent pods. This is especially helpful if you have a long way to travel to get to the laundry room.
Invest in a drying rack to hang clothes that are delicate or might shrink in the dryer. Hanging clothes will also cut down on drying time.
Set a designated day/time to do laundry each week to keep your schedule organized and to keep you smelling fresh.
These are just some of the ways you can save time and money when you do your laundry. Have laundry suggestions of your own? Let us know about them in the comment section below.

Do everything in your power during your student living experience to live in an apartment that have private washer and dryers.
Using laundry detergent pods is a great idea. My first year living in a college apartment, I used regular liquid detergent and it took up a lot of space in my tiny laundry room. That along with three other roommates made it annoying to grab mine when my roommates put it way behind theirs. I decided to get laundry pods about halfway through the year and just kept them in my room. It made it so much easier to just throw one of the pods in the laundry.
Being able to get to the washer in one trip with all the things that I need is a great skill to learn. A walk to the laundry room is long enough just taking one trip. Thanks for the tips.
