Everyone has a roommate horror story. It always starts with someone who looks good on paper, you meet once or twice, sign the lease and then you’re stuck.
Congratulations, you have a new roommate but then after a certain point things start to happen and you realize that you hate them.
Like any horror movie, it starts slowly with little things here and there. Maybe they use your stuff on “accident” or they leave their clothes in the dryer for 4 days while you patiently wait to wash your clothing. And little by little, the things add up until you are trapped in a horror movie with no way out.
Literally and figuratively, you signed a year lease so you’re stuck.
I mean yes, you can always try to sublease but that means pitching your terrible roommate to someone else and it can be an impossible sell.
So you have two options, cry and hope your roommate moves out or toughen up.
You’re in college now, you got this. Also crying, while it may make you feel better will solve absolutely nothing.
Start by writing out exactly what bothers you about the roommate. This may seem insane but if you write it out, the problems may seem smaller than you think. Then just try to think of good solutions.
For example, if they leave their laundry in the machine for four days, start by asking if you can put it on their bed or in their laundry bin so you can do yours.
A lot of the times, the horrible roommate has no idea how bad they are being because you haven’t spoken up. You would be surprised by how much can change if you just assert yourself.
It’s important to remember that in this situation, both parties are paying rent and have equal share so you are entitled to have an opinion and voice.
Having a roommate horror story is a right of passage, everyone has one and if you haven’t chances are that you probably were one. Don’t worry in a few years it’ll be a great story to tell at parties.
