Most apartment complexes do not allow personal grills on balconies due to fire regulations, which makes communal grilling safer and even more appealing. Communal spaces make apartment living more fun and interesting, because they provide you with the opportunity to get to know your neighbors in a relaxing environment and to utilize resources. As the weather warms up this spring—it’s the perfect time to put your apartment’s grill to use.
First, find out the rules for using your apartment’s grill. Look over your lease to determine the outdoor grilling rules, hours, etc. Then, check out the actual grill to determine what type of charcoal or gas will work best. If it’s a charcoal grill, consider a charcoal chimney to easily start your fire.
Next, decide what you want to grill: perhaps the American staple, hamburgers and hot dogs loaded with grilled mushrooms and onions.
Simply drizzle cut up veggies in olive oil and wrap them in aluminum foil before sticking on the grill.
Grilled corn is another BBQ favorite. Try soaking the corn on the cob in water first, then place the corn directly on the grill to steam the corn in the husks as it grills.
Kabobs with steak and pineapple slices are another grilling staple. Even better, take an aluminum tin and place cut up sweet potato fries with garlic and olive oil inside for the perfect hot side.
Insider tip: make a few extra and you will attract some new friends. No one can resist the smell of fresh-off-the-grill food

When it comes to student living, grilling is usually the best method for cooking as it takes less time for the grill to heat up than an oven and doesn’t nuke your food the way a microwave does. Remember to clean the grill after you use it.
I am really, really bad at getting grills started, so I made friends with my neighbor. She is awesome with fire, and she does the grilling if I share the food. It’s totally worth it. Both our roommates kick in a some money for food and together, we grill it up! Life is so much better now that we’ve moved to an off campus apartment.
