There is something homey about having wall to wall carpeting in your apartment.
The feel beneath your toes on a cold winter morning, the magically way all of your furniture sinks into it perfectly. It’s a rug that never slips out of place. However, it’s also not always practical.
Wall to wall carpeting can be a nightmare for college students and the properties that have them.
Let’s start with the obvious reason, stains. Drinks, soups, pasta, almost everything is spillable. Most spills go hand and hand with stains. Unless your drink is clear, there is going to have to be a stain removal process. If for some reason, you cannot remove the stain then you’re basically saying goodbye to your security deposit.
Then you have to figure in the whole dirt aspect of carpet. Unlike wood or laminate flooring where the dirt is visible, on carpeting, dirt can hide for days before you finally decide to deep clean. You could walk across the floor in your sneakers and then walk barefoot, only to soak up all of the germs.
Finally, the smell. Carpet soaks up smells like a sponge in a sink. If your pet has an accident on the carpet then you’ll be cleaning that smell out for days. You don’t want to leave your apartment smelling like a litter box and you don’t want to bring friends over with the smell running wild.
Sometimes wall to wall carpeting is inevitable. It’s one of those things that as a renter, you have no control over. The best thing you can do is clean weekly and try not to spill.
But, if your property has units without this wall to wall wonder, jump on it and invest in a great rug.
