It can be hard moving into a new space, especially if it is your first time being on your own, living with a stranger, or generally being away from your family.
Your first apartment can be scary, so we have compiled several do it yourself ways to make your apartment feel like home.
Add to Your Walls
The first thing that you notice in many apartments is the walls, which have a tendency to be plain and white. Apartments usually come with a given fact that several people have lived there before you and several people will live there after you, therefore, they need to be versatile in the décor department.
Many apartments will allow you to paint the walls however you like, so long as you change them back when you decide to move. However, even if you live in a community that does not allow this, you can still add color to your walls with temporary wallpaper, wall decals, or pictures and art.
Upgrade Your Fixtures
When you move into an apartment and begin changing things around, be sure to hang on to the stuff you take down and store it in order to put it back up when you move out. Upgrading simple things such as light fixtures, bathroom fixtures, and hardware will not only add a more luxurious feel but will also add coziness to your space and begin to make your apartment feel homier.
It’s simple to head over to Hobby Lobby and pick up a few knobs to replace the hardware on your cabinets. You can also do this in your bathroom, switch out towel racks, shower curtain bars, and your shower head in a breeze.
While this could be a bit more expensive, but have a positive effect, light fixtures are very easy to change out on your own, just be sure to take measurements and head over to your nearest home improvement store to see what options you have.
Invest in Unique Pieces
Nothing brings special feelings to your space like a beautiful, unique piece of accent furniture. Whether it is a chair, sculpture, table or a hutch, think about investing in a large piece that will brighten up your space and make you feel good when you look at it. For even better results, place it in a room where you can see it as soon as you walk in.
Keep Your Apartment Clean
You would be amazed at how at home you feel when your apartment is clean and organized. Everything has a place, and if it does not, do you really need it? You should also make your bed each day, which has been proven to make people happier and more successful if done every morning.
By routinely organizing and cleaning your space, you will be calmer and more relaxed, making you feel safe and happy at your apartment.
Add Layers
Adding layers adds depth to your room and creates a sense of warmth and welcome. Try to find large pillows to keep on the couch in your living space, keep throws lazily hung over the arm of the sofa or back of a chair, and add a nice rug to the center of the room.
Create this in your bedroom as well by layering your sheets and comforter, add plenty of fluffy pillows of different sizes and shapes, and drape a throw at the foot of your bed.
Add Some Life
Okay, maybe not a puppy just yet, but what about some plants? Living plants are great for your air and for your mind since the sight is calming and peaceful. Add some plants that do not require too much care, like a cactus, peace lily, or bamboo. These plants do not require a lot of water or sunlight, but they are beautiful and serene.
Frame the Family
It’s always nice to have your loved ones close to you and to be able to remind you of how much they love and miss you. A great way to make your apartment feel like home is to have a few photos of the family framed and hung on the walls or sitting in your living room. You can look to them next time you are feeling homesick or lonely and your heart will suddenly warm!
