Your favorite boy band poster from seventh grade. Mom’s cooking. Showering without flip flops. These are just some of thing you will miss about home when you leave and head into student housing. Your school schedule, friends and classmates, and, in some cases, the city or town, will all be new and unfamiliar to you as you start your first year of college. Make the transition process a little easier by turning your new student housing accommodations into a home. Even though you probably won’t be able to pick out new paint colors, there are still plenty of options to make your new space more “you.” Here are some decorating tips designed to give your apartment that home away from home feel.
Making Your Apartment Feel Like Home
- Temporary wall designs and decals let you decorate with your favorite saying, color or shape. They peel and stick, and then when it’s time to move out, they come off quickly and easily
- Washi tape should be your best friend. You can use it to decorate almost anything, from bookshelves to walls. You can spice up picture frames, table tops, even your cell phone, with washi tape. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
- Student housing may be short on storage, and if you’re sharing with a roommate, space can become a big issue. Get creative with how you store and display your stuff.
- Don’t forget the rug! Think of rugs as the floor equivalent of those temporary wall decals. They will make any room feel warmer and more inviting. They’re also a great way to add a pop of color to a room. Best of all – if you find one you love, you can take it with you when you go.
