“It’s not you, it’s me”
Living with a roommate in college can be stressful, amazing and terrifying. Sometimes it’s a mix of all three. But even though your roommate signed a however long lease, there are some occasions that lead to them subleasing their room.
It’s a big adjustment. Their presence in your apartment is apart of what makes it feel like home. Losing a roommate can be emotional. Before you ignore them or lash out, here are some helpful ways to deal with a roommate who is subleasing.
You can start by talking to them nicely about why they are leaving. Under no circumstances do they have to tell you or give you details. However, they may need someone to lean on. Be nice.
Remember not to give them the cold shoulder. They are probably more concerned about moving out then you think. They are also probably feeling guilty for leaving. Try not to add to the guilt.
Instead, talk about all of the ways that you will stay in touch. Maybe, plan a coffee or gym date once a week? Go out once a month for dinner?
Dealing with a roommate who is subleasing is emotionally tolling. Try to imagine how you would feel in that situation. Having to pack up all of your belongings from the apartment while your roommates who are staying aren’t, it’s rough.
Also, try to stay positive. If your old roommate did find a sublessor then you want to come off nice and friendly instead of passive and annoyed. Everything happens for a reason. Getting mad at a roommate for moving out is pointless because it’s something you can’t control.
