Your college apartment is your sanctuary. It’s the place where you return at the end of a hard day of classes. It’s where you eat your meals, where you sleep and it’s your home away from home at school. Your apartment is also the place where you need to get your studying done.
So how do you make the most of the small space in your college apartment? How do you carve out the perfect study nook?
Use a spare bedroom
Take a two bedroom apartment and turn it into a one bedroom with study. This only works, of course, if you and your roommate are willing to share a bedroom. If you are, that second bedroom can become a great place for housing your desks, computers, bookshelves and other items that make it easy to focus on your studies. A study also makes it easy to close the door and get away from the noise of the TV or stereo in the shared space of the apartment.
Dining Area
If sharing a room is out of the question or if you already have two people sharing each bedroom, it may be necessary to get creative with the remaining shared spaces. For example, some students decide to use the dining area of their apartment for study space. Since it’s easy enough to eat in front of the TV (and most college students do this anyway), you could decide to turn your dining area into a study lounge.
No matter how you decide to use your space, it’s important that all roommates agree. Living together in a small space can be challenging, but if you plan ahead, your college apartment can be a productive and peaceful place to live.

These are some good tips, especially with how creative student housing can force you to be. Something one of my friends and her roommates did once they moved off campus was set up a big coffee table in the middle of the living room and surrounded it with giant floor pillows — a little bit like a Japanese kotatsu but without the blanket or heater. It might be a dining table when we were eating, but a card table or desk later that same night. It was cute and unobtrusive, and perfect for a tiny student apartment.
Another good tip would be to get bar stools for your counter top (if you have one) and use that for eating. This will free up the “dining room/table” can be used for homework and such.
