Not every roommate you have in your college career will be your best friend. Shocking but true, this statement is important to remember when getting to know a new roommate.
You have to live with this person, so it’s best that the group of you at least get along.
To help build your relationship up instead of down, here is a list of topics to avoid with your new roommate.
-
Politics. This is never a safe subject because people tend to feel very attached to their opinions. Political arguments can quickly become heated. Save the energy and ask them about their other interests instead.
-
Their sexuality. Do not bombard your new roommate with questions about their sexuality. It never comes out nice, it almost always comes out as offensive.
-
Religion. Everyone is entitled to their own religious beliefs.
-
Weight. This should be a given, but just avoid this subject altogether. If someone doesn’t ask your opinion it’s because they don’t want it.
