Now that you’ve picked your college and major, it’s time to choose where you’re going to live. Before you can choose the apartment, you need to decide if you’re going to have a roommate or not. Take this college apartment quiz to see if you should live alone or if it’s time to search the classifieds for a roommate.
College Apartment Quiz
Would you like to walk around your apartment naked?
A. Yes, doesn’t everybody?
B. No, gross.
C. Hmm, never really tried it…
You may not have much personal space, but a lot of people have a bubble they don’t want you invading. If you’re more of a free spirit, you should consider living alone so you don’t feel the pressure to hold back your true self.
Are you financially stable?
A. Yes, I have a job and financial aid.
B. What does that mean?
C. My parents give me an allowance and I have a couple of credit cards…
In order to live alone you must be able to support yourself. This means paying your rent and utility bills on time, buying groceries, clothing and cleaning supplies. If you can’t afford these items on your own, you should find a roommate (or two) with whom you can split the bills.
Is school important or just a place to party?
A. I’m not wasting a good education on some party
B. PARTY!!!!
C. Why can’t I study and have a good time?
Whether you want to turn it into a library or a rave, you should be able to live in your apartment how you choose. Whatever your situation, you could find a roommate who has similar goals. However, if you’re serious about school, it may be easier to just have your own space.
How often do you like to clean?
A. I clean everyday.
B. Who likes to clean?
C. I pick up after myself regularly and clean about once a week.
If you hate dishes in the sink and wrinkled (but clean) laundry still in the basket, you might not want a roommate. On the other hand if Mom still cleans your room, you probably shouldn’t live alone.
True or False: What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is mine.
A. False. Don’t touch my stuff. Any of my stuff.
B. True, sharing is caring.
C. Some things are made for sharing, but keep your hands off my laptop.
If you’re the type to break out in hives at the thought of someone else touching your belongings, you probably shouldn’t have a roommate. If you want to keep a lock on your bedroom door and carry a shower caddy from your bedroom to the bathroom in your apartment, you probably shouldn’t have a roommate. If you think you might contemplate murder if someone ate your food, you probably shouldn’t have a roommate.
Which animal calls to you more?
A. Cat
B. Dog
C. I like all animals
Some animals are loners while others are happier living in packs. You need to be in a living environment that makes you comfortable. Otherwise you will be unhappy and will waste your college experience wishing you were doing something else.
What are your results?
- If you answered mostly A’s, you want things a certain way and don’t like to compromise. You’re independent and responsible so living alone would be your best option. .
- If you answered mostly B’s, then you should strongly consider finding a roommate. Or maybe you should just live at home for a little while longer.
- If you answered mostly C’s you land somewhere in the middle. You would make a good roommate, but are also responsible enough to be on your own. Maybe try it one way and then change it up. Whatever feels more comfortable.
These are just some of the criteria you should consider when choosing whether to live alone or with a roommate. Do you have some additional criteria that should be weighed before deciding your living arrangements? Let us know about them in the comment section below.
