Cleaning your shower is already unpleasant enough without the toxic scent of bleach.
You don’t have time to scrub away at the mildew for an hour, and you certainly don’t have time to wait for the smell of ammonia to go away before taking a shower. Here are some cleaning options that don’t involve bleach and get the job done.
1. Vinegar
As an acid, vinegar has the same effects as bleach and doesn’t smell as toxic. Mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle and store it in your tub. While you’re taking a shower, you can clean it at the same time by spraying the mixture on the tiles and scrubbing it with a sponge. No more waiting for the cleaning process to be over before you can take a shower. If you’re not a fan of the smell of vinegar, consider adding a strong essential oil to the spray bottle that will overpower the vinegar.
2. Lemons
Lemons are both antibacterial and antifungal, which makes them a great asset to cleaning the room bacteria likes to live in the most. Water down some fresh lemon juice and go to town on your shower, curtain, and drain. If you’re feeling really DIY, use the lemons and vinegar together. The vinegar will remove current mold, and the lemons will prevent more from growing.
3. Baking Soda
While baking soda is generally used for baking purposes, it also has many benefits when used for cleaning. It is a stain remover, a mold and mildew collector, and a bacteria remover. Baking soda can get rid of any spot, and it collects odors from the air and from surfaces like shower tiles. Sprinkle it on your tub or mix it with water and spray it. Either way, your shower will look brand new after 15 minutes. Baking soda also helps clear clogged drains.
4. Borax
Pure borax, a mineral, has health benefits and is toxin-free. So, using it to clean your shower is completely harmless, and it is also one of the best cleaning agents out there. Pour some borax on the floor of your tub, scrub it gently with a sponge or cloth, and your shower will be spotless in seconds. You can get a 1-pound bag for just under $8.00 on Amazon.
