There is no class on how to find the perfect apartment.
It’s tough.
But, you aren’t the first person to go apartment shopping and you won’t be the last. Most sitcoms have shown some form of the apartment hunting struggle.
While the scenarios are often funny, they also show some great apartment hunting tips.
Here are some apartment hunting tips from your favorite T.V shows;
- Befriend your landlord or future landlord
- When Fez and Kelso try to move into their dream apartment on That’s 70s Show their plans are almost ruined by Fez. Because Fez and the landlord don’t get along it makes the move in process extremely difficult. Take the high road from the start and be a good tenant.
- Read the classifieds
- After finding out that Monica and Chandler are moving in together on Friends, Rachel hunts for her new apartment by reading the newspaper. Times have changed but this idea still works. Swap the newspaper for Facebook or Craigslist and it’s the same rule.
- Don’t judge an apartment by its layout
- Sure, Carrie in Sex and the City never cooks and spends most of the time shopping. So when she found an apartment that had a small walk-in closet and large kitchen but was placed in a great location what did she do? She put her clothes wherever there was space. The lesson here, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
- Have realistic expectations
- Your apartment will not always be a giant space. Elaine on Seinfeld spent a majority of the first few seasons battling with her need for a new apartment but her inability to afford it. Come to terms with what you can do and don’t set the bar out of reach.
Looking for an apartment can be tricky and frustrating, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Start your preparations for the search by watching some of your favorite shows. You might learn something.
