In the months leading up to college, an incoming freshman is bound to receive advice from just about everyone.
Mixed with these tidbits of advice there will likely be comments about what to watch out for.
Warnings of what to avoid, where not to go, who to talk to etc.,
The person giving the advice usually means well. However, that doesn’t make what they are saying true. There are a lot of myths about college and what goes on at a university campus.
Of the many myths out there, the 8 most common are,
- The freshman 15. Not everyone gains weight their freshman year of college. Some people don’t gain weight at all in college. In fact, some people lose weight. Don’t compare yourself to others.
- You can’t switch majors. Just because you said you were going to be a doctor in the 5th grade, doesn’t mean you legally have to become one. If you want to switch from pre-med to zoology, go for it. Follow your passion.
- You have to graduate in 4 years. Have you ever wondered what a super senior is? Graduating in 4 years is fine, but it doesn’t happen for everyone. Take the time to learn from your professors. Don’t overwhelm yourself.
- You can go out every night. Normally, it takes less than one semester for this myth to be debunked. However, if it doesn’t, you need to realize early on how important grades are. Yes, you’re likely more able to go out in college than in high school but that doesn’t mean every night.
- Your professors will never learn your name. This myth is up to you to debunk. Every professor has office hours where they are available to meet with students to go over material and answer any questions. GO. Take the time to meet every professor and your life will be so much easier.
- Attendance doesn’t count. This may be true in some classes, but don’t rely on it. Professors share a lot of valuable information during lecture and some DO take attendance. Set an alarm and go to class.
- Your roommate will be your life long best friend. You might not love your roommate, but you’ll meet so many people during your college career that it doesn’t really matter. Be respectful and friendly. They might not be your best friend, but they could be your perfect roommate.
- You no longer have to answer to your parents. 9 out of 10 students will hear the line “As long as I’m paying your tuition/rent/insurance, you can’t do that,” from their parents. Until you can pay for everything by yourself, your parents still have a say.
College is an amazing time in your life. You get to branch out, meet new people and become your own person. Don’t let a few myths scare you.
