Living in your first apartment means A LOT more freedom.
But, with great freedom comes great responsibility. In the case of an emergency, you now have to figure out what to do without easy access to your parents. To make life easier and make sure most crises are easily averted, it’s good to have a list of emergency phone numbers handy. No, this doesn’t mean your parents or grandparents even though those are all equally important.
This is referring to the 5 most important phone numbers every college student should have.
- Poison Control. Most chemicals like cleaning products have instructions on the container to avoid getting the substance near your eyes or mouth. However, accidents happen and the internet isn’t always reliable. Having the number for poison control can eliminate a lot of stress from a situation.
- Police Department. 911 is meant for emergencies only. In instances that require police assistance but aren’t an emergency, it’s important to have this number. While you can probably find it online, it is easier to have it readily available.
- Apartment Office/Maintenance. Accidents happen all of the time and that’s ok. If something happens where you need to contact your properties manager or maintenance team it’s best to have the number already accessible. An overflowing toilet won’t wait for you to search around for the phone number of the 24- hour help desk.
- Animal Control. A rogue bird or snake can easily make their way into your apartment. What’s not so easy is getting them out. Having the phone number to animal control ready can help but you and your furry friend. It can be very dangerous to attempt and remove an animal by yourself.
- Walk-in Clinic. Feeling sick? If you are, you’ll need to visit a doctor and it’s likely that your primary care physician is home. If you have the number of a walk-in clinic you can easily make an appointment and make sure you feel better in no time.
Living in your first apartment means a lot of responsibility but it doesn’t have to be hard. Be prepared.
