While every bit as good as a single family home, college apartments vary in size and harbor a more interesting array of living arrangements. Thus, life in your apartment can often become hectic and leave you scrambling for order. Though the following list doesn’t encompass every potential need, it should serve as a reminder of the essential items you will need to maintain your sanity.
Backup cooking appliances. Whether you’re late on your gas payment or sharing the stove with roommates, you may find times when you have limited cooking options. However, the microwave is not always as effective for preparing meals made from scratch as it’s at heating pre-packaged foods. This is when a slow-cooker or electric skillet come in handy. In addition to offering you an alternative to stove-top and oven prepared cuisine, small appliances require less energy to operate, saving you money in the long run.
Storage space. This could mean more traditional storage tubs and smaller, plastic containers. It could also apply to other potential storage spaces, including vacant spots beneath your bed, shelves and metal hooks. With some simple supplies and a little ingenuity, you can turn almost any space into a storage unit. Old coffee cans can serve as storage for writing utensils, pegboards work as a place to hang kitchen utensils, while spray bottles can easily hang from a rail installed beneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks. It’s also important that you have a place for every item you own. Otherwise, complete organization is impossible.
Excess toilet paper and personal care products. This is a bit obvious, but it’s easy to overlook small things like shampoo and toothpaste when you’re busy juggling school, work and a personal life. The last thing you want is to reach for an empty toilet paper roll when you’re at home alone or worse, when a special guest is over. To avoid future embarrassment, and ensure you meet your personal hygiene needs, stock up on toiletries and other care products in bulk. It will be cheaper in the long run and it’s something that you’ll always need.
